When you have a loved one dealing with chronic pain, you might find yourself unsure of how to help or even what you should do. There are some easy ways that you can help your loved one every day and when he or she suffers from a flare up.
Offer to Help
Offering to help is one of the best things that you can do. Whether it’s driving that person to a doctor’s appointment, helping clean up around the house or just making dinner one night, you can make that individual feel better about his or her condition when you offer to help.
Listen to Them
A good friend is someone who listens without passing judgment. Someone dealing with chronic pain might just need a friendly ear and someone willing to listen as that person vents about the pain. When you don’t know what to do, just sit down and listen.
Watch for Pain
Watching for signs of pain is one way you can help your loved one. Many people suffering from chronic pain don’t want to ask for help when things are rough. When you see your loved one wincing or showing other signs of pain, you can offer a helping hand.
Think about the way that you feel when you have a bad day. Do you feel better or worse when other people attach themselves to your emotions and complain about their own bad days? You probably feel better when those around you remain positive and upbeat. When your loved one has a bad day, do whatever it takes to remain as positive as possible to help your loved one.
Don’t be afraid to take action when the occasion calls for it. Many people are too afraid to accept help from others. When you see your loved one struggling, step in and help without offering help first. Those suffering from chronic pain often need help from others but don’t know how to ask.
