Exercise and Fibromyalgia


Fibromyalgia is a type of medical condition that can affect anyone at anytime. Though more commonly found in women of an older age, it can also strike those in their 20s and men of all ages. Characterized by by pain that affects one or more areas of the body, there is no known cure and doctors are still unsure of its main cause. Doing simple stretches and other low impact exercises has a number of benefits for your condition.

Increase Endorphins

When you’re in a good mood, your body releases endorphins that boost your mood and make you feel even happier. Exercising can also release endorphins and increase the amount of endorphins found in your body. This improves your mood and lets you fight back against the pain that you feel.

Increase Serotonin

Serotonin is a component found in the brain that impacts your mood. Lower levels of serotonin can make you feel angry, sad, depressed and even aggressive. Higher levels of serotonin make you feel more upbeat and happy. Those higher levels can also reduce anxious thoughts and feelings and make you fall asleep easier. Exercise can increase serotonin levels and regulate the serotonin in your brain.

Improve Flexibility

Poor flexibility can worsen your fibromyalgia. When you aren’t as flexible, even simple movements can cause intense pain. The lower your range of motion is, the more likely you’ll experience more pain during a flare up. Exercising improves both your flexibility and range of motion and can help you experience less pain.

Lose Weight

Losing weight is one of the best ways to keep your fibromyalgia under control. The extra weight that you carry around on your frame puts additional strain and pressure on your joints. When you have a flare up, those extra pounds can make your pain feel even worse. If you want to control your fibromyalgia without using medications and prescriptions, try getting more active and relying more on exercise and less on pills.
